Obituary for Harold Irvin "Bingo & Big Bear" Bringeland
Harold “Bingo” Bringeland (aka Big Bear)
Jan 4, 1931-June 26, 2017
Dad died suddenly in Whistler, a place he loved and called home. As he said, the mountains kept him young! Survived by daughter Dawne (Glen), grandkids Morgan and Devon, son Hal (Carmen), grandkids Mitchell, Carley and Stephanie, sister Louise Mills (Art) from Victoria, and numerous nieces and nephews. He loved attending any event associated with his grandkids!
Dad was an avid skier up into his 80s. He transitioned from his home in Burnaby to Whistler calling Whistler home for the last 5 years, skiing, hiking and biking. Dad was well known and loved at his favourite pub in Whistler, the Dubh Linn Gate. A member of the Old Goats Club with his own sign: “This is Harold’s seat. Move”. (no kidding – go look yourself!)
A Mount Seymour pioneer he built his own log cabin, and helped build Mount Seymour Club cabin. Dad was a CSIA ski instructor, raced locally and Sun Valley. Winters were spent skiing, summers water skiing. He & Frank Smith built Brutus – a classic wood hull waterski boat still in use today.
As a teen, an air cadet and later a private pilot. While in the army reserves he worked on the great floods in Vancouver. Starting out as a draftsman, he later owned his own business servicing the mining and pulp and paper industries. A self-taught engineer, entrepreneur, inventor, carpenter, an eye for art, a wonderful dancer, and well read. A man of many talents!
We miss him dearly and will love him forever.
