Obituary for Ernest Frances Ledgerwood

Ledgerwood, Ernest Francis - July 29, 1936 – June 10 2020.

Ernie was born in Vancouver BC and attended UBC, graduating with the UBC Medical School class of 1960. Ernie went into general practice on Victoria Drive in Vancouver. On June 17, 1961 he married Lynn Barner. They raised three daughters, Marya (Muff), Jennifer and Alison. Ernie continued to practice medicine in Vancouver until 1988 when he and Lynn relocated to Whistler BC where they ran a busy one-man practice. In 1999 they moved themselves and the practice to Squamish. Ernie retired from medicine in 2007 but remained an active volunteer in the community lending his considerable talents to the West Coast Railway Heritage Park, the Britannia Mine Museum, the Squamish Men’s Shed, and the Squamish Lions Club as well as innumerable volunteer shifts for the 2010 Olympic Games.

Ernie was a man of many talents and interests which gave him and Lynn the opportunity to become involved in the Sports Car Club of BC, the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, the Vancouver INDY race and many other fascinating turns. He loved his patients, music, cars, skiing, his woodworking shop, and most of all, his family.
Ernie is predeceased by his father Ernest Francis Ledgerwood ; his mother Jean Eva May (Cook) Ledgerwood; and his sister Patricia Jean Birch. He is survived by his wife Lynn, his daughters Muff (Doug) Hackett, Jennifer (Peter) Thornton and Alison Ledgerwood (Ric Ernst) as well as his grandchildren Jesse (Peta) Hackett, Megan Hackett (Adam Dryborough) and Jaylynn Henry.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Squamish Hospice Society –
A gathering will be held at a later date. If you would like to be notified please email

Dr. L. was our family GP for years in Vancouver, revered forever since for the wit, wisdom and spark he shared throughout. I speak for the lot in saying how grateful we are for having known him, sorry that the chance for a reacquainting has past but certain that his was a life fully and heartily lived. Never one to be forgotten.

Very sorry to hear of Dr. Ledgerwood's passing. He was a long time family friend, not only our family physician, he was a trusted friend of my parents, helping us when my father passed (Roger Frampton) and again when my Mom passed (Mary Frampton). I remember well his love of sports cars, especially Datsun 1600 & 2000 models, my parents purchased two of them, I purchased one from my parents and remember fondly driving up to Westwood race track. TO this day a Datsun 2000 is my dream car. When Mom fell off her roof in Tsawwassen, I remember calling him from Delta ER and he arranged (with lightening speed) my Mom's transfer to Lion's Gate to see the best orthopedic surgeon around.....When I went through my divorce, Dr. Ledgerwood's moving to Whistler was very tempting to move there too with Emma-Clair and Charli. Rest in Peace, dear man, you are racing at the race track in the skies and will be remembered with love. ....Kelly Greville (nee Frampton)

Ernie was the BEST doctor ever who always went above and beyond for his patients.
I first started seeing him in Whistler and then followed him to Squamish when he and Lynn moved.
Let me give you an example of someone who always went above and beyond .I was on a business trip overseas when my bag was stolen which also included my medication.
When I called to inquire if this would be a problem given the duration of my trip ,he assured me that it was- a BIG one.He then proceeded to direct me to the closest pharmacy in Paris with directions in french and an assurance that he was happy to talk to them personally.
Another time he walked me through the process for my husbands diagnoses and what to expect when I had asked him for help.Ironically my husband and Ernie were residents in the hospice at the same time.
My heart goes out to you Lynn and the family.
He was a good man .
I always appreciated his knowledge and his forthright manner.Of course Lynn was such a lovely warm part of the office too.You were a great team.
I wish you comfort during this difficult time and hope you find solace in your memories.

I am so glad you all were able to attend the Westwood reunion last year. Thank you for the special "Datsun cookie.". I hope Ernie was able to talk to lots of his old friends. We'll miss him.

Your husband, Lynn and Dad, Muff was a very special fellow. I alsways enjoyed running into him and having a few words and I will never forget how he helped me pick out a good seat for my toilet. What a sweetie and always good for a chuckle. H will be remembered and missed by many.
