Obituary

Obituary for Ann Mackenzie nee Hutchins

Peacefully in Squamish, BC on Thursday, November 12th, 2020 following a short battle with cancer. Predeceased by husband Dr. Thomas Alexander Mackenzie, Ann was a loving mother to her children Kate, Rob and Sara (Nate). Adored grandmother, “G-Ma” of Isla, Ryder, and Maddex. “Anzie” to sisters Trish (Chuck) Nancy (Dave), who were a central part of her life. She will be missed by sisters in law Elizabeth (Rob) and Ann. Predeceased by dear friend Peter, she will be fondly remembered by his family.

She pursued nursing at Queen’s University and remained in Kingston until departing for Squamish B.C. in February 2020 to be near Sara and Kate. She was devoted to her career however family and friends were her life. She enjoyed hosting gatherings and pursuing artistic projects where she developed community with ease because of her friendly, warm, and compassionate nature.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, November 28th. The service will be streamed online and will also be recorded for those who are unable to attend. Please email Squamish Funeral Chapel at info@squamishfuneralchapel.com to receive a link to view the service online.

A heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Squamish General Hospital and Hilltop Hospice for the wonderful care they provided. Your consideration and kindness will always be remembered.

As expressions of sympathy, memorials to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation would be greatly appreciated.

Sheila Koop

Hi Ann’s family - I am Lyn May’s sister (Sheila McMurrich Koop). When I think of Ann I think of her amazing smile and encouragement. We had such wonderful times at the cottage, especially water skiing at the Hutchin’s and I can see Ann cheering for us when we finally got up. Love to you both, Nancy and Trish. Great to see the gorgeous photos of Ann and her sisters and kids and grandkids.

Kate, Rob and Sara So many warm memories of Georgian Bay when your Mum and I were growing up together - she handled sisters and cousins and friends like a mother hen - all the wonderful things we did together - water skiing, campfires, picnics and your grandfather's endless list of concrete jobs - we had such a good time. I am so happy Killian has had such a close friendship with you over the years and i have loved staying in touch with Trish (and Nancy) and their families. We all send love and best wishes Lyn (McMurrich)and Peter May

It seems impossible to realize Ann is gone. We have been out of touch for a very long time but still remember precious hours together with Ann and Tom in Kingston where we had the pleasure of attending their wedding and seeing them begin their lives together. We had a special and warm relationship for so many years until circumstances changed the patterns of our lives and many miles separated us.

Aunt Kay and Uncle Don always treated us as if we too were immediate family and I can remember shared tales, over a glass of port, of the girls when they were young. One which stands out in my memory was the time when Nancy, a newborn, was supposed to be asleep in the bedroom upstairs. Aunt Kay gasped when tiny Ann appeared with ‘the baby’ who she had retrieved from her bassinet by standing on a chair, lifting her up, and carrying her down a very long staircase for some attention.
And we got to meet Katy, Rob and Sara in brief reunions of our extended family and in some of our stays in Midland.

And so we send our condolences to you, Nancy and Trish and families. And our wishes for continues wonderful memories for Katy, Rob and Sara as well as her many friends.

Elizabeth Austin

On behalf of Karen Corlett Druker and myself, former boarders at Havergal College in Toronto 1963-1966, please accept our deepest sympathy. As Karen said in an email today, Annie was one of the sweetest gentlest nonjudgmental persons we ever have known, perfect for her chosen profession of nursing, and we were all lucky to have had her in our lives. Though we hadn’t seen her in years, we have only the best most positive memories. As boarders, we elected her our Boarder Captain for our final high school year and she never let us down. Sadly, on behalf of my late twin sister, Rosamond ( Rozzie) who was at Queens with Ann and Tom) our sincere condolences
Elizabeth ( Liebes) Austin
